Welcome to the article which is about to give you a 101 on how you can maintain a classy and a healthy beard! The beard is a wondrous mane that some fortunate and genetically gifted men get to which makes them stand out from all the bald-faced children who can’t sprout one!

There was a time when beards would only be seen during No Shave November and the first week of December, owing to laziness. But the advent of the hipster trend changed that and now beards can be seen all year round. And some men can really pull off this look! Hence, I felt compelled to write and articles for the beard lovers! Read on!

First things first, if you have a new beard, congratulations; but the battle has only just begun. If you have taken the decision of growing yourself a beard, then you owe it to that beard to take good care of it and take responsibility because it takes a lot more than just forgetting to shave. So, here are my tips that will help grow and maintain a badass beard.

No Patience, no part
The biggest virtue a beard enthusiast needs to have is patience. Just like Rome was not built in a day, a great beard does not sprout overnight. Depending on the growth rate one has (it differs from person to person) one needs to be patient. Normally, a month or two needs to pass without so much as an accidental snip before your beard can start growing with full flow. So, if you are a patient person by nature, you are good to go. If you aren’t, I’d suggest you become one.

The itch is temporary, the glory is permanent
I am sure you know this by now that growing a beard makes you want to scratch and extremely itchy. That is the one thing you MUST NOT DO. Growing a beard is all about endurance and control. Endure the urge to itch because it won’t last forever. In fact, the itch is actually a sign of your beard growing and moving on from that stubble phase of its early days.  Once you are over that hump, it’ll get easier.

Love and care gets you there

Your beard is made up of hair and it may come as a surprise to many but it is the same type of hair that grows on your head. The only difference is your head has a ‘head’ start (get it?) of almost 14-16 years, depending on when puberty hit you. Just as you have a regimen for looking after your hair with washing and shampooing, you must do the same for your beard. Just like the hair on your head, your beard too can smell funky if you don’t clean it regularly. I would recommend a beard wash if it is available or else a normal no-tears shampoo formula will do just fine. Washing and cleaning a beard is imperative because that is the difference between a person growing a beard by choice and a homeless person who can’t afford a shave.

Comb, brush and make it plush

Now that you have cleaning out of the way, the next step is to comb and brush it properly to avoid tangles. Not only can tangles make your beard look scruffy but they can also lead to split ends. Using a small comb is advisable in the initial months but once your growth reaches a commendable stage, trade the comb for a brush. Brushing helps the beard get its shape and without it, the beard can grow to look scraggly.

Dandruff control is a must

A thick and flowing beard is always majestic but nothing taints its beauty like dandruff. Washing a beard regularly is important, drying it thoroughly is equally so. Water droplets that get stuck in one’s beard can result in dandruff formation. Dandruff might rear its ugly head when your ‘special’ friend is running their finger through your beard and flakes of white start shedding from your majestic mane.  And believe me, that is not pretty. Blow drying your beard is a good option as drying it helps maintain its shape.

Oils and product

Using a beard oil and moustache wax is crucial when you grow a proper beard. A beard without product will have a tendency to go awry and not keep its shape. Oiling not only helps give your beard a shiny, glossy look, it also nourishes your beard, making it stronger and healthier. Beard oils and tonics used to be rare but now there are companies aplenty that make and sell them in India.

So these are some tips that will take your patchy stubble from itching to bitchin! Cheers guys! May the Beard Gods shine bless you with their grace!
